We finished the record. But in January, Jon told me on the phone, I just wanna know. And I said, Dont call it Journey. This is the healthiest Ive ever been, and I think its the best Ive been playin. I hadnt even really addressed or dealt with anything pertaining to that loss. Cause hes brilliant. Can you unpack that for me a little bit? I would suggest that anybody who feels tired and worn out on stage, check out the nearest Nautilus center and go into a program. As soon as you get stuck into counting, you forget what is happening out front. I had that group The Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation] for about three years, and we built a following around the country. I think he disliked Bowie so he was giving him a hard time, and me too. Only certain people understand the technique parts. When you're first starting out, you have to make a name for yourself, and you don't make a name for yourself by being hidden under the name of something else. Once I lock into a song, the rest of the band comes together fast, so I've decided that it's my job to learn the arrangement and then just play it. When I did the "Stable of Stars"' ad for Ludwig, I was talking to a lot of people l didn't know, and they were the drummers for certain bands. I dont know what had happened, but the pain was like an ice pick. And fall back into my life. And it was all based around Steve giving us a call and saying Okay, Im fine now, Im ready to go. And it just didnt happen. Steve! 'Oh no, this is not for me, I went home, and the next after noon John Mayall called me up and said, "I was sitting in the audience last night and I was wondering if you'd come down and sit in with my band." I thought what they were doing was interesting, but what I didn't realize was that what they tend to do is copy themselves. I think in the end we all took Herbies advice, and it ended up being great advice. Everyone thought I would move back to L.A. , but the Starship required a drummer at that time so I joined them. In England, at that time, American records were about four years behind. At the end of the last video from my solo album, for Foolish Heart, theres an extra tag-on section that I shot for the video, to just tell everybody that that particular phase of my career was now over and now Im back to Journey. They'd get a gig somewhere else paying a couple of pounds more, so they would send a substitute to play with me. I believe we were in Hawaii. He's great at all of the percussion things. It sort of gives a rush in the feel, without actually rushing. He's on the "A Hard Road" album, along with Peter Green. Its just that he thinks every time we talk about him, we talk crap about him, and its really not true. Journey got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame a few years ago. So I find it better to listen to what is being played on the top and then react to that. Which singers will do a lotbut I only had to do it once. Using your fingers makes em better. It sounds like me, theyve said. There was a statement I made on a VH1 special, which Im sure youve heardthat I never really felt part of the band. RM: Do you structure your solos any particular way? It sounded good. Im in the boil-down process. Ive read three reviews in my entire career, and they were all so painful that I decided not to read em anymore. I just kept my eyes on him all evening. The idea is not to go in there and try to be Mr. America; the idea is to help yourself. Now, I come offstage feeling great, happy, and everything else. I like to do it when I'm not on the road. Did they give you any advice? I just want to stop for a while. So February 1st was when I finally got home from the last shows, in Alaska. I've still got a set of vibes at home that I play, but it's not the same. So I thought about It, you know, and I went back home. But in the extra tagged-on piece, I cut to stage right, facing me walking offstage, over the shoulders of Jon, Neal, Ross and Steve. Was that frustrating for you, that he sort of pulled out like that? When that audience wanted an encore, and they would not let you leave, it was just so gratifying. And we need to know what you wanna do. I said, Youve tried out some singers? And he said yes. Because it reminds me of so much. AD: No, I haven't. I did not use steroids! GQ: Journey had already made three records by the time you joined the band. I never had much chance to practice them at home. I mean, this last year, I had a whole year off, and I kinda went buggy. AD: He's a drummer by nature. And you can only run on the road and be in front of people so long before it doesnt fix you enough, to where you can run away from things you havent addressed. I dont wanna see that get damaged. I did a one-off record with Sammy Hagar. Slick returned to the band in 1981, after performing guest backing vocals on Modern Times. I was concerned that it would play while somebody got whacked. We did get a little bit trendy in spots, we all occasionally got a bit funny with our dressing, but we did not follow the New Wave thing, or the punk thing. But I personally thought it was dumb. Next I got a small tom-tom, then two cymbals, then a large tom, and sort of built up the kit bit by bit. I'm 22, 23 years-old and I like to play up high, and he suggested to .
